We also like comfort in our job: a well-equipped workplace, approachable superiors, honest communication. Add a few daily rituals and the pay is right too – comfortable. Not for everyone, but for many people this could be enough to achieve their own personal comfort zone at work. Or is it simply a matter of satisfaction? <\/p>\n
The line between satisfaction and comfort zone is extremely thin. Even in our team, in which we unite communicators and change colleagues, we discuss the pros and cons of this small but crucial difference. <\/p>\n
Occupational psychology has been calling for satisfied employees for years. Various studies relate employee satisfaction to performance, loyalty and absenteeism. This is a good thing, because our experience and insights into companies also show that satisfaction is a good thing. It is not to be equated with an indifferent \u201cit’s going well\u201d, with complacency or a convulsive insistence. Satisfaction is a state from which a great deal of strength and commitment can grow – also and especially for new things. <\/p>\n
Companies want managers and employees to change and follow a common development path. However, in order to change, I need to know what for (goal), how (path) and why (purpose). Then I am also willing to change from a situation that is actually satisfactory, to step out of my comfort zone and open myself up to new things. No company changes for the sake of change. So if I, as a manager, can convey to my (satisfied) employees that a change is really necessary – for example to ensure the company’s competitiveness – it makes sense. It is logical that my personal satisfaction is directly linked to a strong and competitive employer, and the way to achieve this is through my contribution to change. <\/p>\n
Employer branding, benefits, retention<\/strong><\/p>\n A Kienbaum study from 2017 does pick up on the supposed connection between satisfaction and a lack of willingness to change, but then resorts to employer branding: Individual benefits would promote loyalty to the employer and spur employees on to above-average performance. This is nothing more than a triad of satisfaction, loyalty and performance. <\/p>\n Internal communication and change consulting can achieve a great deal together with HR and managers. The most important prerequisite is that they know their colleagues and their needs. Far too often, the state of mind of the entire company is oracularized and measures are derived that come to nothing. Or the workforce is sorted into stereotypes instead of taking a differentiated look at the departments and individual people. The aim should be for employees to find their own personal satisfaction and, at the same time, a breeding ground for new ideas. After all, satisfaction is not a state that can be maintained by doing nothing. External circumstances are constantly changing and the task of IC and change can be to inspire the desire and motivation for development. In comfort – and we all know this very well from everyday life – this is hardly possible. There is actually something braking and obstructive in comfort.
