How do you make the incomprehensible comprehensible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In order for communication to be integrated into the strategic considerations of the company management as early as possible, it needs access to the management and the trust of the company leaders. Of course, this does not happen by itself, but must be seen by communicators as one of the main objectives of their daily work, just like informing employees or journalists. After all, decisions such as job cuts do not happen overnight. The earlier and more intensively communicators are involved in such processes, the better they can prepare themselves and the management for day X. And also for the unplanned. And also for the unplanned.    <\/p>\n<h3>Rest (and good preparation)<\/h3>\n<p>We have all experienced the power of rumour mills in organizations. Upcoming changes therefore rarely remain hidden until the day of the actual communication. Keeping this in mind is part of intensive and good preparation. So-called \u201cleakage scenarios\u201d with the corresponding statements belong in the drawer for every major strategic decision, so that in an \u201cemergency\u201d you don&#8217;t take rash, ill-considered steps. Calm is the top priority in such situations.    <\/p>\n<p>If only to avoid being carried away by your own emotions. After all, the areas of communication themselves are often not spared from change. It is not easy to engage in factual, explanatory communication from a position of concern. In this respect, it is particularly important for communicators to take a step back and process negative news.   <\/p>\n<h3>What needs to be considered?<\/h3>\n<p>Serious cuts, especially in the context of job cuts or outsourcing, are difficult to convey to employees on an emotional level. Therefore, concentrate on understanding, explain the context and focus on the facts. And above all, convey respect and appreciation for the employees.  <\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of reasons for appreciative communication:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The remaining and departing employees feel that they are being taken seriously and can understand the move.<\/li>\n<li>Word gets around about how people are treated &#8211; even in such crisis scenarios. In the negative case, word spreads quickly and in numerous ways. There is a risk of customers leaving or local roots in the location may be shaken.  <\/li>\n<li>Labor law disputes are reduced.<\/li>\n<li>The self-esteem of the people affected is not diminished.<\/li>\n<li>The productivity of the company is ensured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As communicators, we often have to walk a tightrope while maintaining a balance. On the one hand, we have to keep an eye on the needs of the employees, while on the other, the expectations of the management or parent company beckon. This is challenging and sometimes requires us to perform the odd communicative somersault. Redundancies, skills shortages, site closures &#8211; there are many topics that are not easy to communicate, but our job is to package them in such a way that they meet all requirements.   <\/p>\n<h3><strong>We recommend<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Good contacts. A close exchange with decision-makers helps to be informed of changes at an early stage. <\/li>\n<li>Good advertising. Communicators should also encourage management to think about communication from the outset. <\/li>\n<li>Good sparring. Communicators can support managers as sparring partners in conveying a uniform appearance, uniform messages and \u201cone voice\u201d. <\/li>\n<li>Good preparation. This includes not only a crisis plan for emergencies, but also open channels of communication with management, the works council and committees if things need to move quickly. <\/li>\n<li>Good role planning. A CEO, for example, does not always have to be the face of change. Board members or other CxOs can also take on this role. Communicators, on the other hand, are neither advocates for the workforce nor mouthpieces for the management. Transparency in the distribution of roles helps everyone involved to achieve greater clarity.     <\/li>\n<li>Good advice. You can&#8217;t always manage everything yourself. Experts can also be consulted to minimize risks and make change processes gentle and sustainable.  <\/li>\n<li>And last but not least: Keep at it.
